Frquently Ask Questions
Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization
Common questions about the Canadian eTA application
As of March 15, 2016, all individuals traveling to Canada by air are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). An electronic Travel Authority (eTA) is a new entry requirement affecting foreign valid passport holders of eligible countries who intend to travel to Canada. This is normal procedure.

A valid eTA and travel document (passport) will not guarantee your entry to Canada. When you arrive at the border, a border services officer will ask to see your travel documents or passport along with a few basic questions. The officer will then decide if you can gain entry to Canada. This is normal procedure.

To make an application for an eTA through this site you need your valid passport, email address and a credit/debit card or PayPal account. If additional information is required, your issued agent will contact you in order to complete your application.
Most visitors are granted no longer than a six-month stay. A border services officer at the port of entry will determine how long exactly you can stay in Canada at your arrival and stamp in your passport the date you must depart Canada. This is the normal procedure.

The authorization is valid for five years or until the expiration date of the traveller’s passport. If you want to stay longer than your authorized stay, you can apply for an extension at least 30 days prior to the previously authorized end of your stay.
You can not apply with out an active passport, a valid debit or credit card and a valid email address. It only takes a 5-10 minutes to apply. It is crucial that the details you provide for your eTA application are exactly the same as they appear in your passport. You can only apply for an eTA online if you hold a valid passport from any of the eligible countries.
